Through a joint sponsorship, the Center for Advanced Medical Education, Inc. and Clinical Consultation Services, in cooperation with the University of Pennsylvania, Center for Bioethics, are offering a CME correspondence course in medical ethics entitled:

COURSE OVERVIEW AND INTENDED AUDIENCE

This self-paced correspondence course is designed for all physicians who wish to enhance their understanding and knowledge of ethical issues in healthcare. This course will provide physicians with a knowledge base of the key issues, theories and principles of medical ethics. Participants will gain insight into the ethical dilemmas they face in their daily practice and acquire the intellectual tools needed to identify, address and resolve these issues.

The course consists of a series of readings that provide an overview of the ethical issues in health care; including, geriatric issues, end-of-life care, consent, pain management, AIDS, pediatric issues, transplantation, managed care, resource allocation, clinical integrity, dual relationships and substance abuse among physicians.

Participants will be expected to demonstrate comprehension of the material as well as the ability to apply ethical theory to their practice. This is accomplished through a posttest consisting of short-answer questions and a written analysis of a case study. Using the course readings as a framework, the case analysis must be at least three pages and include both a discussion of the ethical issues raised in the case as well as a possible resolution to the problem presented.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  1. Recognize ethical dilemmas as they arise in the participant's practice setting

  2. Apply the theories and principles of medical ethics to the patient encounter

  3. Discuss clinical recommendations that are grounded in both the art and science of medicine, with patients and families.
